The Albion Playfield came alive with the sound of laughing children from the communities of Salt Spring, Norwood, Anchovy, Dumfries, Mt Horeb, Bogue – New Ramble, Granville, Lilliput, and Mt. Salem, during the Sports Day that culminated the SDC’s 3-week Teach the Youth summer programme supported by The Spanish-Jamaican Foundation. The children participated in races and various competitions, including a Spanish song contest, while enjoying various treats and entertaining activities.
During the Summer Programme, over 400 at-risk and vulnerable children aged 8-15 years attended all-day camps where they participated in a number of academic and self-development sessions dealing with building self-esteem, conflict resolution, anger management, and career choices.
In addition to providing monetary support in the amount of JMD400,000 for the camps, The Spanish-Jamaican Foundation also collaborated with the Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College to have three SJF Bursary awardees conduct weekly Spanish classes at a number of the camp sites.
